About Hellenism Watch
Hellenism Watch (Παρατηρητήριο Ελληνισμού) is an independent, non-profit research initiative. It systematically tracks the situation, threats and opportunities facing Hellenism in the diaspora, the Balkans, Thrace and the Eastern Mediterranean, and backs every assessment with sources.
Why it exists
Neither the Greek state nor any diaspora organisation systematically monitors Hellenism abroad today. The Greek diaspora has people, knowledge, networks and commitment on a scale few nations can match. What it lacks is a permanent research mechanism that gathers and analyses information from every country, so that no one has to react in the middle of a crisis.
Our principles
- Independence. We have no institutional or party affiliation, and no political faction influences our analysis.
- Evidence. Every claim comes with a source. Where a source is missing, the text says so.
- Non-profit. We have no commercial interest. Our texts and the book are free.
- Open collaboration. Researchers and analysts from any country with a Greek presence can contribute as Fellows.
- A national perspective. We care about the survival and flourishing of Hellenism.
What we monitor
- Diaspora and institutions: the state of Greek organisations and associations abroad, the institutional tools they have, and the gaps that leave them vulnerable.
- Geopolitics and security: developments in the Aegean, Western Thrace, the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean, with a focus on what directly affects Hellenism.
- Foreign influence networks: soft-power networks of third countries that operate in the same places as the Greek diaspora.
- Opportunities and strategy: concrete proposals for an institutional response, from language diplomacy to diaspora representation.
How we work
Every analysis rests on sources named in the text. We check every piece of information readers send us before we publish anything. Fellows publish under their own name, and their texts go through a basic academic and editorial review. If you spot a mistake or a missing source, email us at info@hellenismwatch.org.
Our first publication is the book «Η Ελλάδα έχει Ομογένεια. Η Τουρκία έχει Μηχανισμό.», which maps Turkey's outreach ecosystem institution by institution. It is free (Greek only). Analysis appears on our blog.
The founder
A Greek living abroad and a product of Greek-language education outside Greece, Alexios Ntonas is a founding member and one of the main initiators of the European Foundation of Hellenism. A champion of the Greek diaspora and the Greek language, he has repeatedly highlighted the strategic value of the diaspora for Greece. In his public interventions and analyses he points out that the vast network of Greek organisations and communities abroad is not used with a coherent, long-term strategy.
Hellenism Watch is his personal initiative, independent of the European Foundation of Hellenism and of any other body.
Legal form
Hellenism Watch is being established as a non-profit civil company (AMKE) in Greece. Until then, Alexios Ntonas is personally responsible. Full details are in the legal notice.
